Descrição: ABSTRACT: The *Revolta da Chibata* (Revolt of the Lash), which took place in November 1910, marks a significant moment in the history of the Navy and of social struggles in republican Brazil. Traditionally understood as an episode of military insubordination, the revolt takes on new dimensions when analyzed through the lens of the Black worker's experience. This article aims to understand how the newspaper *Correio da Manhã* constructed representations of the rebellious sailors—and João Cândido Felisberto in particular—during November and December 1910. To this end, the research is based on an analysis of the newspaper's editions, integrated with specialized literature on the subject and on Black labor. Institutional Navy records and João Cândido’s later recollections are used only as occasional counterpoints to examine the limitations of both the journalistic narrative and the official memory of the event. The analysis reveals that, while the newspaper acknowledged corporal punishment as one of the revolt's driving forces, it also constructed ambiguous representations of the sailors: at times recording their demands, and at others associating them with a threat to the republican order. Thus, the research demonstrates that the representations produced by the press played an active role in shaping public memory of the *Revolta da Chibata*, revealing the tensions between citizenship, race, and labor during the First Republic.
